Algebraic Concepts Course II

Program
Algebraic Concepts is a two-year course offered through the Solebury School Math Enrichment Support Program (MESP) as an alternative to a traditional Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Algebra II sequence. The curriculum is designed to strengthen fundamental algebraic skills and to increase mathematical confidence for students with diagnosed math disabilities and students who have limited success in previous coursework. The course includes a standard class period plus a math lab which meets once per week and utilizes the facilities and resources of the MESP.

Algebraic Concepts Course II
(ACII)
Students will discover the fundamentals of algebra. They will be taught through a multisensory and multidimensional type of curriculum. Technology will be infused whenever appropriate. This course fulfills the second course of the three course math sequence detailed in the math graduation requirement.

Students will be asked to:

  •           Demonstrate multiple ways to answer a question.
  •          Complete daily homework and keep a timeline for longer projects.
  •          Complete a math notebook.
  •          Work with technology whenever appropriate.
  •          Purchase a TI-84 or TI-84+ calculator.
  •          Organize their materials.

Accommodations
If determined to be necessary for student success, accommodations may be granted.

Possible accommodations include but are not limited to:

  •          Extended time on summative and formative assessments
  •          Multiple types of assessments, including verbal testing
  •          Private one on one tutoring (additional fee)
  •          Peer support in the Math Center (MATH CENTER HOURS)
  •          Access to Technology

Student Evaluation

  •          Students will be evaluated at the end of each trimester to assess computational and procedural fluency.
  •         Regular parent, teacher, and student conferences will be offered to bridge home and school success.
  •     Successful completion of ACI leads to ACII and then Geometry, thus fulfilling the graduation requirement for mathematics.
  •     For those not enrolled in ACI, they may alter the course sequence thus providing additional support after completing Algebra I or Geometry.

What Follows the Program?
By the end of they year, students in the program will have a stronger foundation in the second level of Algebraic Concepts. This foundation will include greater depth of understanding in equations, quadratics, polynomial functions, conic sections, rational expressions, and exponential and logarithmic relations. This course also covers a wealth of areas on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the American College Testing Program (ACT). Successful completion of the program enables the student to take elective courses in mathematics, an independent study, or be recommended for Advanced Placement Statistics.

Eligibility for Admission
This program is available for prospective students entering the Algebra II level of classes who require additional support or those already enrolled in the Algebraic Concepts I class. Evaluation by the Admissions Committee will be the initial basis for eligibility. An additional evaluation by Director of MESP may be required.
